Bei Jing, two weeks before the Olympics, was not a peaceful place to be. The whole city was constantly on the move, even in the early hours of the day, and I remember often walking down a street and seeing buildings that hadn't been there the week before. This reed, reflected in a glassy still lake at the Summer Palace, was such a striking find because it seemed so far removed from everything that was going on around it.
