Texture and intimacy was the focus of my macro talk for the Edinburgh University Photographic Society, which is why I chose a portobello mushroom for this composition. The mushroom's cap, although soft, looks hard like a rock, whilst the gills are fine and papery (hence the title I have chosen). One person said to me that it looked like something from outer space, which seemed apt because in this case you don't have to know what something is to appreciate its textures and form - similarly with my photo 'Alien Encounter', it is the mystery around the subject which makes it more interesting.
